Product Description

GEMS workstation can be customized to 4 CPUs and 48 hardware acceleration VALU units. This is a general platform and we do not need any extra hardware devices for the GEMS acceleration. For the same hardware investment, GEMS can increase the simulation performance up to 4 times compared to other EM simulation software. What hardware we use in GEMS acceleration is VALUs that have been built in the regular CPU. This platform supports both Linux and Windows systems.

GEMS Workstation

Compared to Intel processor, AMD has more physical cores, which is similar to the GPU but much more powerful and robust than GPU since it includes total 48 cores, each core has its own VALU, which allows us to speed up the simulation four times based on the hardware platform. Based on the available VALU units in the CPU, GEMS uses SIMD instruction sets to accelerate the EM simulation without requiring any extra hardware devices.

In other words, if you have a hardware platform, GEMS can be 4 times faster than the other EM software that are without VALU acceleration technique.

Compared to GPU acceleration, GEMS VALU acceleration enhances the capacity of CPU without requiring extra hardware devices. GEMS acceleration is based on the cache, memory, and compute units of the regular CPU. However, GPU acceleration does not allow the interaction between the GPU and CPU, otherwise, the GPU performance will be dramatically decreased.

Using the VALU acceleration, 4 AMD CPUs (48 cores and 48 VALUs)
($795 /each) in GEMS supercomputer system has the similar
performance to 8 Intel CPUs (32 cores and 32 VALUs) ($1069/each).
If we spend $100 on the simulation, GEMS combining with AMD CPUs can reach the average 25Mcells, which is two times higher than Intel CPU. The reason is AMD has more VALU units than Intel CPU.

For the same hardware platform, GEMS can double the performance
for the practical problems. All the performance we show here is for
the practical problems, namely, the boundary is 6-layer PML and
arbitrary material distribution inside the domain.

Obviously, spending the same money on the hardware, we can double
the simulation performance. Actually, even without VALU acceleration, GEMS is 20-50% faster than other EM simulation software packages. GEMS VALU has further improved the simulation performance.
